Not Your Ordinary Adventure Story

Reviewed by Alvin M. Stenzel originally for Amazon

For a crime/adventure story, Lacroix is an interesting twist.  Ditch the big city back alleys and car chases and enter an entirely different environment.  A castle, forests, lakes and blissful peace, but hiding terrible secrets.  A young, single mom, nearly alone on what was supposed to be a deserted castle estate?  Not how it turns out!  Terrible dangers lie around every corner.  I was fascinated enough to read it in three days.  It may seem to start out slowly, but it's only the initial ride to the top of the roller coaster.  Hang on!

Wesley Britton Review Maria Elena Alonso-Sierra's New Nick Larson Novel

In this latest edition of Maria Elena Alonso-Sierra’s Lt. Detective Nick Larson series,  readers familiar with such stories will find themselves in comfortable territory encountering many typical mystery story tropes.

For one thing, our main hero, New York police detective Nick Larson is an experienced investigator with a big personal problem.   After his ex-wife committed suicide, he’s on restricted duty while he works out his pain. At first glance, he might not have been the best choice to lead an investigation of an apparent suicide by hanging.   Naturally, this death is followed by other suspicious hangings that might be related murders. Larson, along with his trusty partner, Detective Vic Sacco, along with other tried and true NYPD associates like Tish Ramos, Steve Pensig,  and  Josh Carpenter, spend most of the book trying to connect the ever-increasing accumulation of dots that should reveal, sooner or later,  the motives for the crime spree.

The second plot is a carry-over from a previous Nick Larson story (“Mirror, Mirror”)  in which two twins are locked in a  psychopathic sibling rivalry. Creative baker Laura Howard is the good twin trying to protect herself, and ignite a relationship with Larson, while brilliant and manipulative evil twin Sandra Ward does everything she can to destroy her sister, even while incarcerated.

Distinguishing attributes of Alonso-Sierra’s story telling include a very descriptive eye,   especially for the ever-widening cast of supporting characters and vivid city settings during a cold and harsh winter. On every page, the reader feels like we’ve been taken into city dwellings, shops, office buildings, everywhere Larson has to go to investigate leads, dead-ends and witnesses from every strata of New York life. The author demonstrates a deep well of research into police procedures and medical analysis, as demonstrated by the list of acronyms at the beginning of the book. Adding to the verisimilitude, a fast, energetic pace keeps the reader engaged from beginning to end.

If you’re like me, you’ll not only get involved with the developing relationships between the leads,  you’ll want to continue the ride in the next volume of the Nick Larson saga. Without providing spoilers, not everything is resolved in Hanging Softly. We got more surprises coming and I can’t wait for the next chapters.

Mad Librarian Gets Five Stars From Red-Headed Book Lover

MAD Librarian
Author: Michael Guillebeau
Genre: Women’s Crime Humor
ISBN: 978-0-9972-0552-7

Published by Madison Press
Available from Barnes & Noble and Amazon here

Reviewed by Aimee Ann Originally for Red Headed Book Lover Reviews

MAD Librarian follows the incredible Serenity Hammer. Serenity is a librarian, but she is so
much morethan this as she is a librarian with a cause, in other words, she is on a mission,
and nothing will get in her way! She lived in a quaint town in Maddington, it is her home,
and she adores it, especially her precious library! However, her library is under threat
thanks to the politicians who want to close it down for good. This is a sad truth which
is happening in the world today, but I will discuss this more later! Serenity, however,
is strong and powerful, just as powerful as the pushy politicians she has to deal with
and so, she conjures up a plan and decides to fight back,
and this is the premise of this intriguing, humorous novel.

I adored everything about this wacky novel, it may be a humorous book, but it is so much more
than this as it is full of twists and turns galore that will keep you entertained from beginning
to end. It is funny and incredibly enjoyable, but it also has some serious moments
for those readers who like a novel with some depth.  I adored the underlining
theme of this story which was,  the fact that libraries
are being closed all over. It is a sad reality, and I hate it so much, the ones that are
still open are being updated to suit the technological age, and that is so sad to me as
 am a huge traditionalist.

My point is, I adored how the author of this wonderful novel explored this theme and
based a whole story around it so well done Michael Guillebeau!

MAD Librarian has a host of eccentric, unique characters, they were certainly ‘out there’
but they were brilliant, and they propelled the story of the book along perfectly. I particularly
loved Serenity; I thought she was a brilliant protagonist and unique. Now that I think about it
I can’t think of another protagonist to compare her too, so that shows how unique and special
 she is!

As well as the characters being superb, so is the incredible dialogues. The long sentences were
wonderful and made me engrossed in the novel. It was like the author’s words were spiked with
adrenaline because I found that when I started reading, I could not stop! He is a wonderful,
talented author and so I would implore all of you lovely readers to read this book!

To conclude my thoughts on Mad Librarian, I would say if you are looking for a unique,
fun, entertaining novel that will keep you hooked from beginning to end then this excellent
book is for you! This incredible read gets Five Stars from me!

Interview: Crime Writer Works Schedule Around Jeopardy

Hi! I am Carolyn Howard Johnson, your trusty New Book Review blogger and author of the multi award-winning HowTo Do It Frugally Series of books for writers. This blog has heretofore been exclusive for reviews but I thought I’d do a special series of interviews after I chatted with Jeanie Loiacono, President of Loiacono Literary Agency – Where ‘can’t’ is not in our vocabulary!  I thought sharing the interviews would help the many subscribers and visitors to this New Book Review blog, including authors, reviewers, and, of course, readers who just might find a new favorite author among the featured books and authors.

So, today welcome J.J. White.

J.J. White is an award winning author who has had articles and stories published in several anthologies and magazines including, WordsmithThe Homestead ReviewThe Seven Hills ReviewBacopa Review, and The Grey Sparrow Journal. His story, “The Adventures of the Nine Hole League,” was published in the Sherlock Holmes Mystery Magazine, Volume 13. His novels published by Black Opal Books are: Prodigious Savant (2014), Deviant Acts (2015) and Nisei (2016). He was recently nominated for the Pushcart Prize for his short piece, “Tour Bus.” He lives in Merritt Island, Florida with his lovely wife, Pamela.
  1. What is your genre? Is it fiction or nonfiction? Crime. Fiction

  2. What made you want to be a writer? It seemed the best outlet for my creative talents without applying too much effort.

  3. Of all the authors out there, who inspired you most? James M. Cain.

  4. What is your writing style? Do you outline? Linearly? By scene? Why? I know the beginning and the end of the story. From there I outline a chapter using bullets and refer to those bullets as I write the chapter.

  5. Do you write every day? How much? How long? Only on weekdays for two hours after watching Jeopardy with my wife. I can’t type, so I usually eek out ten to fifteen hand-written pages a night.
  1. Do you think reading is as important to writing for an author? Why? You can’t write anything of quality unless you read prodigiously. I listen to sixty or so books a year and read about ten. I have a long commute to work.

  2. What are some of the things you would like to share with budding authors? Learn how to paint, instead. J Seriously, though, if you insist on self-flagellation, write and read whenever you can and the breaks will eventually come your way.

  3. Do you have any marketing and promotional advice, referrals, tips you would like to share? Try to entice the employees and vendors in your workplace to buy, read, and review your book. If your book is good, they’ll spread the word.

  4. Do you think conferences are beneficial? If so, what have you learned? Which ones do you frequent? Conferences are the best place to find a publisher or agent or both. I’ve learned to attend a variety of conferences in order to get different perspectives on similar subjects. I like the Killer Nashville and Thrillerfest conferences.

  5. Where can we find you, your books and when is your next event? My website is at www.jjwhitebooks.com  My latest novel, Deviant Acts, was released in November by Black Opal Books. I will be interviewed on CrimeFiction.FM, December 10, at 11 am Eastern Time. Represented by Loiacono Literary Agency, Jeanie Loiacono www.loiaconoliteraryagency.com/authors/jj-white

King's Traveling Man Called "Deviant Thriller"

The Traveling Man
 Series: The Travelers: Book One
Author: Michael P. King
Genre: Crime Thriller

Reviewed by Kirkus Review
Husband and wife con artists must get back on their feet after a scheme goes spectacularly wrong in this criminally good debut by King.
Married hustlers Tom and Patty (or, at least, those are their aliases) arrive in a small town alongside their partner, Buddy Ray, with the intention of pulling off a lucrative con—selling contaminated lakefront land for a high price. Everything proceeds according to plan, until Buddy and Patty go against Tom’s instructions and take on a doomed side deal. From there, things take a dangerous turn, and Tom and Patty are left to pick up the pieces of their business and personal relationship (and heal more than a few physical wounds). After taking a monthslong break, the couple tries to get back in the game—with similarly messy results. On the spectrum of grays, these two are much closer to black than white. They cheat, steal, manipulate, blackmail and even kill when the moment calls for it. Yet readers might still find themselves white-knuckling their books (or e-readers) when the pair is in a tight spot. Despite the couple’s more questionable values, Tom and Patty’s relationship is based on love, loyalty and trust, and even they have their red lines: “We don’t scam civilians. Rule number two. We use them; we pay them; we stay out of jail.” Charismatic, levelheaded Tom is especially likable despite his criminality. It also doesn’t hurt that Robert and Pamela Johnson (as they call themselves in the second half of the book) are more than once pitted against an even more cutthroat thug who makes them look like the good guys. Surrounding them is a cast of superbly sketched characters whose competing motives constantly trip up their plans, such as Marcie, the overconfident, small-time real estate agent they’ve looped into their land-sale con. With a story every bit as intricate and entertaining as the personalities who fill it, King’s uncommonly solid debut is a must-read.
An absorbing, deviant tale of redemption.

Amazon Reviewer Samara Calls Jukebox Astonishingly Good!

It's been a long time since I picked up a book and was knocked off balance by a writer who is so talented that she takes your breath away. In the first few opening lines Viola punches you in the face with her unabashed and swaggering prose; this is a writer who is so fresh she feels like an adrenaline injection.

There is something exciting about her writing style, direct, fast and street style sassy! Jukebox gripped me from the very beginning; I loved every minute of reading about these people who in turn sicken me with their vile behaviours yet still manage to engage my imagination and delight me with voyeuristic pleasure.

The attention to detail is stunning; she has succeeded in making her all of her characters ridiculous yet real at the same time. The accuracy is not only with the way she dresses and describes them; it is present in their diction and turn of phrase.

Benjamin Zephaniah describes her as having a beautiful and twisted imagination; she is also a proficient story teller and like Zephaniah her writing is gritty, realistic and unafraid.

Now and again fiction comes along that is not just a book; it's a text, a little piece of history reflecting the society from which it was produced. Jukebox is about a city of players from all walks of life, self-obsessed, greedy and manipulative, a satirical viewpoint of our own selfish, social media obsessed society.

I can remember the first time I read Toni Morrison and Arundhati Roy, that feeling that you are in the presence of genius, a writer who is magnificently gifted and no matter how hard you tried you would never even come close to being able to write like this. I already know this is a book I will return to and read again.

Ultimately Viola has created a satire that is so bloody British you expect Vinnie Jones to appear in the pages, if it were a film it would be directed by Guy Ritchie and would be set to a John Murphy soundtrack.

Expect to hear good things about Saira Viola; Jukebox is a work that will be talked about, a contender for the Booker... Absolutely! Although I suspect with Saira Viola the best is yet to come.
