Are you heading to the zoo and you would like to tell your kids what animals they will see there and what they might be doing? Then Out And About At The Zoo would be a great choice. Easy to understand and easy for children to read along with. It is filled with simple yet colorful pictures that even held my one year old's attention!

Celebrate Earth Day. Give a Book to a Kid

Because Kathy Stemke is an author who has written about Earth Day for Children, I asked her to share with my New Book Review Readers. Her essay will be interesting to all. Her book will be the perfect gift for any child who is destined to grow up in this world.  Keep scrolling for ways to celebrate Earth Day and ways to share with a child.

The History of Earth Day

By Kathy Stemke, author of  Trouble on Earth Day

The height of hippie and flower-child culture in the United States, 1970 brought the death of Jimi Hendrix, the last Beatles album, and Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”. Protest was the order of the day, but saving the planet was not the cause. War raged in Vietnam, and students nationwide increasingly opposed it.

At the time, Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of legal consequences or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity.

The idea of Earth Day came to the founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.

Senator Gaylord Nelson said, At a conference in Seattle in September 1969, I announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment and invited everyone to participate. The wire services carried the story from coast to coast. The response was electric. It took off like gangbusters. Telegrams, letters, and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had a forum to express its concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes, and air - and they did so with spectacular exuberance.”

As a result, on the 22nd of April, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.

Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts.

In time, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage. Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. It also prompted President Bill Clinton to award Senator Nelson the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1995) -- the highest honor given to civilians in the United States -- for his role as Earth Day founder.

With Earth Day Approaching on April 22nd it's time to focus on educating our children about conservation. Troubleon Earth Day would be a great resource for this purpose and a super addition to any school or home library.

Learning how each of us can take steps to protect our environment is important for children and adults alike. It will take all our efforts to help improve the environment for a healthier tomorrow. Trouble on Earth Day is a great start for children.
Here’s an excerpt from the resource section
of Trouble on Earth Day:

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Title of Review: Unexpectedly touching and inspiring, June 25, 2011

I found "Wings" to be a well-written novelette that will be easy for
youngsters and young adults to read and understand. The authors draw
you in with touches of suspense, warmth and humor that keep you
turning the pages. Once I started reading, I didn't stop until it was
done.

Some of the "lesson" portions of the story seemed a bit obvious; but
then, I've been studying metaphysics for years. The lessons may be new
to younger readers. Even so, the wisdom of "Wings" is undeniable, and
spoke to my heart. I was surprised to find myself shedding tears at
some of the more moving portions of the story.

This could well become a classic along the lines of "The Little
Prince." I agree with the reviewer who found the writing cinematic -
"Wings" definitely has potential as a story for the screen.

Congratulations on a job well done, Elise and William Hicks!

Holiday Gift Books for Kids in Your Life

Three Children's Books
Details Below

Synopses by Denise Cassino

I just found some fabulous books for children that are getting rave reviews everywhere! They're Homiedre's boxed set of 3 books: What is Love? What is Friendship? What is Imagination? Here's what one reviewer had to say:

"These excellent books - rich in content and in art - can now be obtained in this boxed set, a box full of love, friendship and imagination just waiting to be consumed by the children whose school exposure to these values is diminishing. .Adding these books to the child's library is not only an enriching experience for the lucky children who own them, but the purchase of this set aids the Channing-Kullijian Foundation and hence to the encouragement of everyone to restore the arts to our schools. Everyone wins - but especially the children who will doubtless place these books on the top of their favorites list!" ~Grady Harp http://bit.ly/oGtRne

BOXED SET.jpg
The books feature "Children, dressed in soft 'critter outfits' accompany the couplets while cavorting on fluffy clouds set on a sky blue background. This is extremely effective, eye catching and makes a wonderful group read.:

WHAT IS LOVE? Here's a snippet:

'You can find Love in all kinds of places.
In smiles and laughs and all kinds of faces.
It's inside our hands so we can use them with care,
Love is even in the curliest of curly strands of hair.
It's in every single toe from big toe to small,
And then into our dance feet
when we're having a ball!'

WHAT IS FRIENDSHIP? - Various aspects of friendship are explored through the charming use of a little boy and his quiet life-like toy robot. Again, the rhyming text makes this book an ideal group read and the artwork is bold and concise; splendidly executed. Text and illustrations go perfectly together.

'Some friends were made to love,
as others were made to care,
But what all friends have in common,
is knowing how to share!'

WHAT IS IMAGINATION? - A little girl, Petunia and her pet stuffed dog, Patches go about a typical day in a child's life and due to the ability of the little girl and her "pet" the day is livened up in oh so very many ways via the use of their imagination. What a wonderful thing it is to be a child (or an adult, for that matter), with an active and creative imagination! Again, the art work in this book, as with the previous two is rather amazing and simply fun!"

'Well the school day is done, and it was a blast!
Thanks to my imagination, it went by so fast!
But now I must walk, all the way back home,
And see where my imagination, is willing to roam.
So I look at the trees, that are ever so tall.
And can't help to feel, ever so small!'

So don't miss these books - and when you buy them, you'll receive dozens of fabulous downloadable bonuses for you and the children in your life. Click here: http://bit.ly/oGtRne

Deb Hockenberry Reviews Children's Book That Teaches Tolerance

TITLE: Nettie Parker’s Backyard (June 14, 2011)
AUTHOR: C.V. Smith
PUBLISHER:Avid Reader Publishing Group http://avidreaderspg.com
PAGES:180

Reviewed by Deb Hockenberry

NettieParker’s Backyard is a gentle yet action packed and war – torn story. It’s the story of Nettie’s life which is full of prejudice and bullying. Early in her life she starts seeing and hearing signs. What do these signs mean? Are they magical? Only Nettie can find that out.

When Nettie is nineteen-years-old, she travels to London, England to study to be a nurse. Upon her arrival, the nursing administrator is very nice to her but soon she is met with more prejudice from others. Is this because of her physical challenge or because of her race?

Nettiemeets two young boys one day when their ball flies across the fence and into the Charring Cross Hospital grounds. The boys don’t think they’ll ever get their ball back and are very hestitant to talk ask for it. Nettie’s caring and compassionate nature can’t understand this but she soon will. She talks with the boys for awhile and is surprised to learn that the boys were sent to London by their parents to escape the horrors of World War II. Kind, compassionate Nettie doesn’t think there’s enough hate or fear in the world to make parents and children separate! She soon finds out differently!

It was very hard for this reviewer to put this book down. Throughout this well written account of Nettie Parker, not only do you learn about her ancestry and her adventures in London but you learn a secret language too!

I highly recommend Nettie Parker’s backyard. Although the historical fiction is written for children, adults will thoroughly enjoy this magical book too!

Heather Leister Reviews Children's Electronic Picture Book

 Title: Brave RooneyAuthor: Gerry Renert

Genre: Children's Electronic Picture Books.
Publisher/Developer: Bacciz LLC
Buy Link: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/brave-rooney/id444860680?mt=8

Reviewed by Heather Leister, the iPhoneMom

Brave Rooney is a fantastic storybook app for the start of a new school year. It’s the story of a boy named Rooney who finds himself going to a brand new school. At this school all of the kids are literally superheroes but he is just ordinary Rooney, a boy who’s having a tough time fitting in. One day the school has a poetry recital and the brave and fearless superheroes become scared to death about getting in front of each other. Rooney has the courage to be the first one to share and he shows them all a different kind of bravery. This is a terrific story about accepting others differences and being okay with your own self.
Brave Rooney was written by Gerry Renert who is an award winning and Emmy nominated children’s television writer. He’s tapped into this familiar worry, “Will I fit in?”, and he presents it in a humorous way that I think children will really understand and relate to. I know my kids did! The illustrations are fun and there are interactions woven throughout the story. This story is a winner for back to school or any time of the year!
