Dr. Perro is a pediatrician, so her book focuses on children. However, everything in this book applies to all humans, of any age. Probably it even applies to dogs, cats, goldfish, and animals free of human ownership.

Already, the preface is a powerful call to arms. Calmly, without hysteria, the authors summarize the theme of the book: “the systemic health failures among our children are a result of something even more troubling than the physical symptoms in their bodies; they are the cumulative outcome of being born into and living in an environment that has been made toxic by agrochemical industrialized food production... unless they are eating 100 percent organic food or homegrown vegetables from ecologically managed soil, they are eating toxic ingredients such as pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics... children carry toxic loads from the mattresses they sleep on, the soaps they use to wash their hands, their sunscreen, and their antibiotics. Add to that mix of toxic exposures the fact that much of their food is loaded with chemical toxicants, and you get very sick children--children who are being made sick from the inside out.”

Sections of the book explain in clear, plain language a wide variety of technical issues, and reading it is worthwhile for this reason alone. For example, I've only had a vague understanding of our gut bacteria until reading this book. You may not know much about genetic engineering; this is a good place to gain an understanding of the controversy surrounding this technology.

The authors focus in on the gut and its huge population of microscopic life. They show how mistreating this “microbiome,” or worse, poisoning it, relates to a wide variety of symptoms that are typically misdiagnosed. Instead of putting band aids on symptoms, the need is to treat the cause.

Perro & Adams advocate the use of “the five Rs for this: remove, replace, reinoculate, repair, and rebalance” to get gut health. The many case studies from Dr. Perro’s clinical practice show this to be spectacularly successful.

What damages the gut of so many children; so many people? “Our position is that GM foods are the key ingredient in the larger toxic pesticide problem, thus they cannot be separated” (p 120).

The book focuses on the USA. The occasional fact is country-specific, for example the horrendous lack of real regulation, but almost everything applies globally.

I do have a criticism. Two thirds of the book is organized along lines I find logical, but the opening one-third is... unusual. Time and again, the reader is told the overall conclusions, until they become utterly repetitive. This is interlaced with the evidence for these conclusions. The progression of evidence is fine, but the book would be far better to start with that, and gradually and inexorably lead to the conclusions. However, the content, the evidence presented, the scientific caution and rigor of the arguments, and above all, the many case studies, make this book essential reading, not only for medical personnel, not only for parents, but for all thinking people.

This book could be titled “Ten case studies in the best of humanity.” It so happens that I am Australian, the author is Australian, and all ten of the interviewees are Australians, but this is incidental. The events, environment and culture that provide the setting would be different in another land, but there are jewels like these ten everywhere.

While the book features ten jewels, my review is about eleven. Rod writes in a very personal style, and never blows his own trumpet, but comes through to be like his interviewees.

Here is a sample of Rod showing himself: “In my youth, there was talk of nuclear war and the possibility that our world would be consumed by the insane strategy of Mutually Assured Destruction. To us it was a theoretical proposition, a disaster that could happen. We had the possibility of calamity, but climate change is different because it is actually happening. In my lifetime it’s gone from just being a possibility to us seeing glimpses of what a disrupted global climate system looks like. Nuclear weapons and global warming aren’t going away. Humanity is doing a poor job on both fronts.”

These eleven are people who care, who have made a difference through intelligence, perseverance and creativity. Some are well known, others I’ve never heard off, but all have a passion for truth, science, decency, being of service. Because of these attitudes, they are all alarmed by our environmental crisis, and in different ways are doing their best to work for a survivable future.

I can’t do better than to quote Rod on what the book is about: “If there’s one defining attribute shared by the people in this book, it’s motivation — these are people who understand why we need to act. Each has seized upon the idea that there is something important; that there’s something they can do for the environment and for the community. The people in Fragile Planet are fiercely driven to avert the worst of climate change.”

I really enjoyed Rod’s style of bringing a person to life, faults and all. While staying the journalist interviewing someone, he has the skill of showing his subject’s inside reality, “what makes her tick.” For example, I got to really like maggot farmer Olympia, and strongly approve of what she is doing: in effect converting agriculture from a single-line process of fertiliser-to-waste to a circular economy of waste providing feed in a forever-loop.

Ten Journeys on a Fragile Planet would be admirable compulsory reading for high school kids, to inspire them, and to educate them in what matters.

Comments about Nine Fold Heaven from Amazon –

 The latest book from author Mingmei Yip takes the reader on an epic journey -- both emotional and geographically. The Nine Fold Heaven is the story of a young Chinese woman, Camilla who is taken from an orphanage at the age of four, and forced to work for one of the worst gangs in Shanghai. Not that she has a bad life with them. In exchange for her various "services" to the gang, from sexual favors to singing entertainment to assassinations, she is well taken care of, as least in material objects. Her emotional life however, has been completely deprived and suffocated.

The prose and the description of the setting lends an authenticity to the story that made it feel like a real history to me. I was intrigued by the comparisons between Chinese culture and American culture (although this was in the 30s) and there are both positives and negatives to both in my opinion. The clashes between opposing viewpoints in politics and religion gave more dimension to the characters and created a thought-provoking larger conflict than just what Camilla was going through. But the most important thing, especially in historical fiction, is for the setting to feel realistic and I felt like the streets of Thirties Hong Kong and Shanghai were brought to life in this book.

Camilla is a noir heroine who readers will love to hate or hate to love. The author makes it clear she's a product of her environment and never apologizes for her behavior which she shouldn't. The narrative is colorful and an exotic mix of cultures and traditions and will bring the sounds and flavors of a troubled lawless past society to life.

This is an important and though-provoking book. It sets out a rationale for the kind of life I have advocated for during the past 45 years: cooperative; in dynamic, sustainable balance with the environment; seeking win-win solutions through consensus; valuing wellbeing.

I think the concepts of A New Reality need to be understood by the decision-makers of our times, including politicians and the heads of large corporations.

A particularly valuable aspect is that our current world of conflict is explained. We need to understand it in order to transform society.

At the same time, I find it to be completely unrealistic. Like almost all projections from the past to the future, it fails to take into account the fact that we are past the tipping point. The actions that lead to catastrophe are in our past, and we are seeing their consequences unfold, right now.

Current estimates of extinction rates are 1000 times the “background rate.” If Salk and Salk are right and there is a distant future for humanity, their archeologists will probably consider us to be the plasticoferous era. We live on Poison Planet, which is driving a wide range of illnesses, and increases death and suffering.

I wish I could share the authors’ hope. I read the book wishing they could convince me. But certainly while the rulers of humanity are those most to gain from using the rules of the past, there will be great difficulty in transitioning to the rules necessary to have a future.

However, I return to the start. This is a wonderful book, inspirational, simple and logical. It should be necessary reading for everyone.

What Foreigners Need to Know About America from A to Z by Lance Johnson, a second generation United States citizen, has so much information in its 614 pages that anyone coming to our shores should find what they need to prevent cultural gaffs and language boo boos. They can discover ways to find jobs, open businesses and make friends in their new country, America.

Johnson is a world traveler. He knows what it's like to get along in other cultures. It was his travel, and the comments from those wanting to move to the United States, which made him notice what an important resource What Foreigners Need to Know could be. He has done the world a great service by the wonderful compilation of information he has gathered in this book to help others find their way around.

The paperback is divided into four sections:

* Section One: America's Heritage: the historical background of why America became what it is today - government, the American Dream, standard of living, etc.

* Section Two: America's Culture: How we conduct our live - etiquette, literature, movies and much more.

* Section Three: America's Business: Our business environment, customs and operations.

* Section Four: America's Language: Practical ways to improve English grammar, usage, writing, speech and communications skills. How not to embarrass yourself using an incorrect word.

Each one of these sections may be read individually or as the need arises. However, the entire book is so well thought out that I can't see why anyone would want to skip over anything Johnson has put together.

People moving to America have needed a book like this for many years. Thankfully, it has arrived.

Kentucky must be a lovely place for a murder mystery! With the mountain tops not being widely accessible and long country roads, nefarious activity can be conducted. Lush Kentucky Blue-grass meadows and idyllic scenes do not appear to hide any secrets. However, a young newspaperman, Russell, begins quite an adventure sleuthing after his friend is murdered. We wonder why during most of the story. 

Winding country roads are less traveled, so those determined to conduct illegal business might be willing to use them. Fewer people, fewer watching eyes. Russell and his friend Tom bravely and knowingly find work with criminals felling trees. The work is difficult hard labor. They learn a few clues to help them try to solve the mystery. They also each have a love interest which keeps the story moving along. 

Honest and hard-working people live in the area, although many are now laid off. Russell shares his knowledge of what is going on high on the mountain tops with concerned neighbors, who happen to serve fine Sunday dinners. 

Roads that appear to go nowhere as mining changed from shafts beneath the earth to strip mining. Did you know fewer workers are required for strip mining? Such practices cause unemployment and harm the environment, adding to difficult economic times. At first, companies could just leave the land behind until laws were written for them to restore the areas. In this story, songbirds in some areas are not singing and water wells have become polluted. Hmmm, are we getting closer to finding the truth?

Mountain tops cannot always be seen from the ground, so could it be people were really blowing them up for an even easier mining method? The coal practically fell in the trucks with this method. and few people were aware. One thing leads to another. Clues begin to fall in place. A neighbor boy's drawing causes Russell to look for extra space in his rooming house, causing their capture and almost demise.

Describing this book is an interesting endeavor. Rather than ask the usual questions it actually makes more sense to ask what Time Masters isn't. In this case the answer is … Nothing!!! Beauchamp has managed to intertwine all genres in a coherent manner that I have yet to find elsewhere. At the same time she’s also managed to work in all the elements of a good story with a superb quality of writing.

The hero - Dallan - is not only a hunk, but he's got the Romance factor going on big-time. If Shona hadn’t already claimed him and he was for real, I'd certainly be first in line to do so myself. I’ve read quite a pile of books before and since first picking up Time Masters and still have to say over a year later that I've not seen much out there to rival the writing of this debut author. She’s crafted an excellent plot and characters that leap off the page into the reader's imagination as if real and remain vivid even after putting the book down.

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll even be frightened at times. As the cover says this is One Wild Ride. If you just have to find the best roller-coasters – this one delivers and you can even experience it from your favorite reading nook. So hop on and enjoy as the story goes from a "comedy sketch" due to characters being out of their accustomed environment on one page to fight scenes with action, adventure and suspense on the next. These fluctuations come at you often and fast in this book, as full of emotional power as a minefield of explosives. Of course the intense emotion is part of what makes the book so riveting. I could have stayed up all night reading just to find out what would happen on the next page, in the next chapter or even how the book would end. I have rarely found another author who can evoke such intense responses with the written word.

This book is one that I can’t bear to lend out and risk losing as it’s worth rereading many times. I had to buy an extra copy just for sharing so I could horde one to get my fix of satisfying reading anytime. Geralyn has put so much meat into her story that with every read I still find new details and thoughts popping up. Before it was even released, I quit trying to count my “reads” and still hope to squeeze in time to read it again and again. I am so glad this is only the first in a series and am already chomping at the bit for Time Masters Book Two: The Prophecy.

The Coal Truth is the deplorable story of the proposed Adani mine in the Galilee Basin in Queensland, Australia, but is relevant to everyone, everywhere. 

Think of this coal mine idea as a case study about what’s wrong with our world, and what we need to do to fix it.

David Ritter is the ideal person to write this book. His research and journalistic skills are obvious on every page. His background as a lawyer give him the ability to explain complex concepts in a way any person will understand. And his role in leading Greenpeace Australia shows his commitment to creating a survivable future.

This is an important book. Reading it hurts in places -- in our crazy world, the truth is bound to -- but there is a lot of positivity to balance the gloom.

Part I is a powerful, personal but thoroughly documented monograph by David. It should be compulsory reading for everyone, particularly those who wield power. Naturally, they’ll dismiss it, but the rest of us need to rub their noses in it.

The second part details the evidence, by a group of experts with impeccable credentials.

I found Chapter 11 by John Quiggin to be particularly powerful, because it avoids any questions of environmental damage, ethical considerations or humanitarian/health issues, but focuses on matters the dinosaurs understand: MONEY. This chapter alone should convince anyone with half a brain that the Adani project is a no-goer. 

Only an idiot, or a bribed politician, can ignore the message from David and his fellow authors.
