Marketing whizzes Larry and Peggy DeKay have published Book Fairs for Authors: How to Leverage Book Fairs to Build Your Author Platform. Here’s what I love about it above and beyond what I wrote about book fairs in my The Frugal Book Promoter: The couple includes a lot of resources including lists of book fairs, book festivals, book expos, and trade shows and tells how book fairs can “impact speaking opportunities.” Peggy says, “Your book is not your baby… your book is your business.”

Twitter is not just for letting people know the type of cereal you are having for breakfast anymore. Savvy professionals are learning how to use it as a powerful marketing asset in their corner. Fortunately, there are a lot of resources that will help you learn how to harness the power of Twitter for your business. Carolyn Howard-Johnson is one of those people. In her newest Frugal series book, she tackles Twitter for retailers head-on, and the result is a focused, easy-to-follow plan for any retailer when it comes to incorporating Twitter into their business plan.

Frugal and Focused Tweeting for Retailers: Tweaking Your Tweets and Other Tips for Integrating Your Social Media is a wealth of information packed into a easy to navigate book. It will take a retailer from the initial stages of establishing a Twitter presence all the way through the strategies they will need to employ to make Twitter an effective marketing machine.

Carolyn goes beyond the "how-tos" of Twitter by walking through how your Twitter decisions affect the impact of your Twitter presence. For example, she gives great advice on how to set up your tiny biography in a way that reinforces your brand. And this is the kind of business savvy help you get from every page of this book.
By now, you probably have a website up for your business. Most people admit that it's a must-have for any business. But finding traffic to your site is another animal altogether. If you are worried that a Twitter account is another website project you will have to spend time marketing for, take heart. Carolyn spends time in her book showing you how to find followers for your Twitter account. And if you find good followers for Twitter, you will increase your website's presence at the same time.

Frugal and Focused Tweeting for Retailers is far more than just a simple "how-to" book. Carolyn goes on to show you how to implement marketing strategies that are unique to Twitter. She also discusses some Twitter-specific tools you can can use. With tens of thousands of tools out there, it's worth a lot to have a Twitter expert weigh in on where to look for the tools you need.

Education Book Gets Late But Great Debut

Title: This Business of Children

Chloe Jon Paul wrote this book in the early 90s and tucked it away thinking that it would never get published. She wrotge This Business of Children because I wanted to capture the elements of this profession in a way that shows the struggles so many teachers face in trying to do their jobs well. At this particular time in my career she wasn’t very happy teaching in the school district I had transferred to out of state. She was forced to “teach to the test” and my creativity suffered immensely. Administrative support was non-existent so she took a leave of absence for a year and went back to Maine where she had done the best teaching of her career, and wrote the book.

Chloe Jon Paul says, "The message of This Business of Children  basically this: We teachers are human beings coping with the problems in our own personal lives. When we enter that classroom each morning, we have to shelve those problems and deal with students whose problems may be far greater than our own."

Bill Page said it best in his review: Teachers will identify with every element of this insightful, riveting glimpse of the education world. Parents will enjoy comparing their own schooling with Vera’s portrayal of getting an education. And, every reader will savor the reminder that life goes on.

I was actually fortunate enough to read an advance copy of this book and am so glad I did because the ideas have stayed with me for months--and helped me negotiate a local exception to a long standing school board policy on behalf of my daughter. I've been watching for the printed version because I'm eager to have several friends and family members read this book. So glad this is available now!

It's an easy read...just an hour or two, but it will save you hours of headaches if you can apply the strategies. The tone is conversational, not condescending or complicated, like you're sitting down with an old sales pro who's actually likable and ethical. I especially like the chapter on "Jijitsu email." This would be a fabulous gift for employees or friends in any sales related business.

As I read this book, I was impressed with the concern and respect with which EksAyn showed. His ideas and tips were beneficial not only in business or in sales, but as we encounter people in life as well. By showing Integrity, respect and kindness, we will do better in all aspects of our life. These principals, rather than techniques, are positive for everyone.

First Runner-Up Eric Hoffer's Legacy Award
What Foreigners Need to Know About America: From A to Z, Lance Johnson, A to Z Publishing - This enlightening book advises immigrants on what they need to know about getting along in American society. The author addresses misconceptions Americans and immigrants often harbor about one another, then makes the case that differences are often minor and can easily be put aside. The remainder of the book focuses on specific aspects of American society: government, religion, education, the arts, business, and so on. In each case, the author provides an explanation of the American way, then offers tips on how visitors can blend in. Sometimes, the advice is practical; for example, the author provides information on how to apply to American colleges—a key concern for young people from immigrant families. In other cases, the advice is light-hearted—lists of top American movies are provided, evidently for use during those key conversations around the office water cooler after the Academy Award nominations are announced.

Jennie Nash Coaches Those Who Would

Reviewed by Carolyn Howard-Johnson, multi award-winning author of The Frugal Book Promoternow in its third edition and other books in her HowToDoItFrugally Series of books for writers.

Note: Don’t decide on buying this book until you read the subtitle and this review. At first I interpreted the title to mean a book on how to make a business of reviewing books. I am thrilled that it isn’t because, as the owner of AuthorAccelerator.com and the coach of authors who have landed “book deals with Big 5 houses like Scribner, Penguin Random House, Simon Schuster, and Hachette” the author is the one to write this book to help you coach you to success with what you already know and will learn from this book.

Jennie Nash is not above starting her book with a bit of psychology. Thank goodness. People who coach are incrementally more successful at it if they know how to inspire. To do that well, they must be inspired. Jennie definitely inspires me.

As an author of books that started as a text for my UCLA classes on marketing books, I often lament that authors don’t find me, my books, or services until after they have made costly mistakes. If you are part of the publishing industry with a yen to help people succeed, this is the perfect place for you to start coaching, too, and avoid big booboos that happen when people haven’t done their homework or—almost worse—have taken advice from people who really don’t have the experience and credibility to help you do the job.  Letting Jennie Nash coach you to be a coach with a well formatted book will make the process about as foolproof as it can get. Further, I always say that learning from books is the most frugal way to get information that prepares you for success.

Read Books All Day & Get Paid for It is endorsed by Lisa Cron whose books I recommend in the indexes of my books for writers. In future books and editions, this book will be listed there, too!

Mindy Lawrence Gives Helpful Book for Emigrants Five Stars

What Foreigners Need to Know About America From A to Z
Subtitle: How to Understand Crazy American Culture, People, Government, Business, Language and More
By Lance Johnson
Author's Web Site Paperback available on Amazon and Amazon Spain, Germany, France, Austria, and UK
Five-Star Review
This review is from: Mindy Lawrence, originally for Amazon

What Foreigners Need to Know About America from A to Z by Lance Johnson, a second generation United States citizen, has so much information in its 614 pages that anyone coming to our shores should find what they need to prevent cultural gaffs and language boo boos. They can discover ways to find jobs, open businesses and make friends in their new country, America.

Johnson is a world traveler. He knows what it's like to get along in other cultures. It was his travel, and the comments from those wanting to move to the United States, which made him notice what an important resource What Foreigners Need to Know could be. He has done the world a great service by the wonderful compilation of information he has gathered in this book to help others find their way around.

The paperback is divided into four sections:

* Section One: America's Heritage: the historical background of why America became what it is today - government, the American Dream, standard of living, etc.

* Section Two: America's Culture: How we conduct our live - etiquette, literature, movies and much more.

* Section Three: America's Business: Our business environment, customs and operations.

* Section Four: America's Language: Practical ways to improve English grammar, usage, writing, speech and communications skills. How not to embarrass yourself using an incorrect word.

Each one of these sections may be read individually or as the need arises. However, the entire book is so well thought out that I can't see why anyone would want to skip over anything Johnson has put together.

People moving to America have needed a book like this for many years. Thankfully, it has arrived.

Author: Zane Smith
Title: Retreads
Publisher: Real Time Publishers
ISBN: 978-1-84961-034-6
Genre: Business novel

Reviewed by Terrence Ward for Allbooks Review

Retreads is a business novel about an up-and-coming predatory industry in the wake of the Great Recession: career marketing companies. Author Zane Smith introduces us to a cast of mostly unlikeable characters – unlikeable not because they aren't realistic, but because they are. The amoral attitudes and soulless closing techniques will be chillingly familiar to anyone who's had a brush with a professional scammer.

Set in the offices of fictional Executive Careers International in bustling Atlanta, Retreads takes the reader into the lives of some of the slickest operators and “bunko artists” in the career marketing industry and shows how they take advantage of people down on their luck and desperate enough to fork over what little money they have left to get back on their feet. Written as an illustration of how these operations are different than legitimate career counseling firms, the vibrant characters and very real conflicts left this reviewer feeling tense and genuinely interested about what would come next – pretty impressive for business fiction. A great read for someone looking for gripping slice-of-life fiction, and required reading for anyone who's been pounding the pavement looking for an executive position.

Book Review

Reviewed by Alice D. originally for Readers Favorite

Knowledgeable author Lance Johnson has written "What Foreigners Need to Know about America from A to Z", primarily to help the foreign-born visitor or immigrant to function effectively and easily in the United States. There are four sections to this invaluable reference tool: American Heritage, American Culture, American Business and American Language. The twenty-six chapters which comprise these four sections tell in detail of how the United States is a country of diversity and change. The author states correctly, over and over, that countries of the world must learn about each other's culture and that citizens of the United States must understand that the world is uncomfortable with our dominance in economics and our political outreach. People around the world see us as not caring about other countries, and conclude that we come off as self-righteous and having a superiority complex in world affairs. However, citizens of the United States are honest, fair, kind and grateful as expressed in our actions which appeal to other countries of the world.

"What Foreigners Need to Know about American from A to Z" should be given to every person immigrating to or even just visiting this country. Author Lance Johnson is well-versed in world-wide protocols and tells of how WalMart has to close down its stores in Germany as it didn't research how to serve German customers. The author tells of how to participate in many everyday things in the United States but also reminds the reader that flashing the soles of your feet in Thailand is a big "no-no" and that in Bulgaria head nods of "yes" and "no" are the opposite of ours in the United States. The author gives lengthy descriptions in the sections on American business and American language, making "What Foreigners need to Know about America from A to Z" useful for anyone, including Americans themselves. The table of contents, the quizes, the many lists of interesting facts, and the accompanying colored photographs make this book one that should be available worldwide. It is a gem and treasure trove of valuable information that will help the foreign-born and American-born navigate their world without making serious or offensive mistakes.

Elise Cooper Shares Newest in J.A. Jance's Mystery/Thriller Series

Unfinished Business by J. A. Jance brings back the Ali Reynolds character. As with all her books Jance knows how to build tension and is a fabulous storyteller.  This series, more than her other series, focuses and highlights the characters. In this installment there are three sub-plots: A new character, Mateo, has just been released from prison after sixteen years; a tenant who has anger management problems and sees everything as a humiliation; and Ali’s father who has dementia.

Mateo Vega will hopefully be added to the High Noon Enterprises team and readers can see his character grow in future books. Ali Reynolds and her husband B. Simpson own High Noon Enterprises, a computer security service based in Cottonwood, Arizona. Mateo was accused of killing his girlfriend, and though he was innocent, took a plea to avoid a life sentence. When the board finally paroles him, the only job available is working at a thrift store. Because he was a computer expert, while in prison he kept up his skills and decides to ask his former boss, Stuart Ramey, for a letter of recommendation. Stuart happens to work for High Noon Enterprises and is impressed with Mateo’s skills.  Since there is an opening at the firm, Mateo is quickly hired. Just as he begins his new job, another employee goes missing.

“Mateo Vega has a case that strands both Arizona and Washington.  I thought, who better to help solve the case than my perfectly good cold case guy, Beaumont. I wrote his scenes in the first person, so the readers understand his point of view, where he is coming from and what he is thinking.  The Ali books are written in the third person.  I tried to write him in the third person for this story, but he said, ‘no way Jose.’ After a few days of absolute frustration, I gave up.  My new editor at Simon & Schuster never read a Beaumont book and tried to change his voice to third person. The moment I read that part I realized he was no longer this living, breathing character but was suddenly a cardboard cut-out.  I hope readers will give it a chance and see that it ties into the story.”

The High Noon business complex contains extra offices, which are rented out to tenants for additional income. One renter is Harvey McCluskey, a crooked home inspector who's two months behind on his rent. Ali and her employee, Cami Lee, go to McClusky's office to serve an eviction notice, which Cami films on her IPAD. McClusky is embarrassed and infuriated, and vows revenge against the ladies. He kidnaps Cami and plans on torturing her.  Needing all hands-on deck, they turn to the artificial intelligence Frigg who can hack into anything. This AI handles everything from background checks to strategic planning and can apply cyber-magic to tracking down Cami’s kidnapper.

“I wrote the protagonist as disturbing from the beginning.  The reader knew the High Noon folks were in jeopardy long before those working there knew.  He turned out that way because of his environment.  His mother was mean; I based her on my parental grandmother.  All three had anger issues, were easily humiliated, never took responsibility, and held grudges.  I came to realize now how my grandmother influenced the writing of these characters.  I did not see the resemblance between Broomy, his mother, and my grandma Busk until you asked the question.”

While all this is going on Ali must also handle family concerns.  Her father, Bob, has dementia, and her mother, Edie, is having a hard time continuing to be his caregiver. They tried hiding the fact that he's losing his memory and acting out. Edie is exhausted, Bob is depressed, and the couple have been isolating themselves.  As the situation goes downhill fast Ali insists that her parents get help.

“I put in this book quote, ‘Lucid and rational one minute to off the charts the next.’  I spent several months the last year corresponding with a woman who had to put her husband into a memory care facility due to dementia.  She cared for him at home until she could no longer do it.  She died six months after he did.  The cost on the caretakers’ health is insufferable. I was thinking of her in the back of my mind as I was writing these scenes.  Seeing what happened to Ali’s mom was sad yet realistic.”

Serious real-life issues are addressed in this story.  The characters make the story come to life and Jance does a wonderful job telling their story.  Making a cameo appearance, speaking in the first person instead of the book’s normal third person, is J. P. Beaumont, the retired detective who is now solving cold cases. Fans of Beaumont will understand how his presence is only enhanced with first person narratives.  This does not affect the flow of the story which is very fast paced.

Tim Ferriss Offers How-To for Organizing Your Life

Title: 4-Hour Work Week
Author: Tim Ferriss
Author Site: www.fourhourworkweek.com
Reviewer Name: Matt Lehr
Reviewer Link to Review

Reviewed by Matt Lehr

In the past 4 months I have read nearly 2 books per week – each pertaining to Marketing, Goals, Motivation, Entrepreneurship, and Making Money. I recommend this strategy to any motivated individual and suggest that there is no better way to truly understand yourself and develop your own ideas than starting by reading and then transitioning to writing as well.

A great place to start for any entrepreneur: “The 4-Hour Work Week” – By Timothy Ferriss

The first time read though this book I must admit that I felt Tim was rough around the edges and subscribed to some philosophies I never could take on as my own. But after reading it twice through and a third go around on CD, I have changed my stance and believe that nearly every idea and concept he presents is doable and beneficial.

Here are the main points of my interpretation of Tim Ferriss’ work:

1) The Rat Race

Is this really your life? Working hard everyday and planning for a retirement 40 years down the road. Tim offers suggestions to shake it up do some unordinary things that will make all the difference in the world. Understanding that you have the freedom to do what you want to do and go where you want to go is the hardest step for most people. Determine why it is you want something and then start to figure out how you can make it happen. Do not be afraid to reject the norm and live life differently than the rest.

2) Understand your Time

Tim explains that the goal of the “New Rich” is not just to attain more money, but the most important treasure is time. After all, how can any of us fully enjoy the money you make if we don’t have time to enjoy it or people to experience it with. Find ways to work and make money but do not sacrifice the most important opportunity which is the time to do what you want in life. Strategy’s from the book include checking email very rarely and training clients, employees, and even your boss to not rely on you as a bottleneck

3) Automate Everything

Why do something yourself when you can pay someone else to do it for you? Find a way to make money that doesn’t need your constant maintenance. My understanding of this concept is the “business owner vs. the self employed.” Business owners sit back and let others run their company while they collect the pay check, meanwhile the self-employed put in their sweat equity on an hourly basis to earn the money. Both are considered entrepreneurs, but the self employed have only eliminated their boss, but still do all the work.

Tim explains that the goal is to move towards automation – Meaning whether or not someone is sitting on a beach or sleeping, money is being made either way. He explains to take “you” out of the equation and benefit from the goal which is not only more money but more time.

4) Outsource Everything

Having someone in India do your work for you is not something left to major Nike and Coca Cola type companies of the world. Using the internet, outsourcing is available at the click of a button and can be set up by using one email.

I took this one to heart and have not looked back. Mr. Ferriss was right on and once you learn to outsource effectively it changes everything. From paying per project or low hourly wages, having someone work while you sleep is priceless. I found the best site to use (that is not mentioned in the book) is www.odesk.com. This website makes it easier than finding new friends on Facebook – the difference being for 20 bucks this friend will do your research project – and do it well.

5) Get Away

The “4-Hour Work Week” subscribes to lifestyle design and world travel. Tim teaches you how to live abroad and do it both on a budget and while you manage your business. He includes success stories of others and offers up ways to cut loose and experience it all.

You have to actually read or listen to the book to truly understand Tim’s off the wall approach and view of life. As I stated his methods are not for all. Yet I have accepted that following them in principle can work out great. Putting your own spin on his thoughts and ideas and applying it to your situation can be very beneficial. His book has been one of many that has empowered my journey. I recommend it as great pushing off point for the budding entrepreneur.

The book is split into 26 chapters, one for each mile of the marathon. In each chapter i explain a leadership principle in detail, provide examples of that principle being used in a business context, then each chapter concludes with how that principle was applied to my running goal of running my first Marathon at the age of 52.
This book will be of interest to existing leaders and people looking to move into leadership.

Gordon says, “My reasoning for writing the book, and I think a good hook into the book is that I wanted to raise money for charity, so decided to run a marathon. As well as writing the book I managed to complete it in 6 months with no prior training or experience, even more I got 5 others to do the same (we ran a second marathon in Cologne in October). I will continue to run and one of the plans is to run in Athens next year over the original course from Marathon to Athens.”

Gordon will be donating 30% of profits to cancer charity, one that one of his fellow runners has set up for Ovarian Cancer.
