Penny Piva Reviews Foodie Cozy Mystery
Author: Gayle Trent
Publisher: Bell Bridge Books
Murder Takes the Cake Book Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGnKwHYlPCQ
Blog: Fatal Foodies (http://fatalfoodies.blogspot.com)
Penny Piva, blogger at Sweet Brown Poison http://sweetbrownpoison.blogspot.com/, says, "Through the magic of the Mighty Mighty Internets, I found Gayle Trent. Not that she was lost, but she was out there, floating around. The Google and I caught her. I can't remember how. My powers are strong, but my mind isn't.
"But I found her and that's all that matters. Her cozy mystery, Murder Takes the Cake is all the deliciousness I could possibly want in a book. Cake. Good plot. Wacky family. Did I mention cake?
"And! Gayle is a kindred spirit. Come on...loves cake decorating...and who do we know who went to pastry school? Gets her magical powers from DC...like someone else you know...
You're going to love her as much as you love me--and I KNOW that's a LOT!!!"
Here's what she has to say about the book:
Yodel Watson was dead. And some people blamed my spice cake.
When the meanest gossip in Brea Ridge dies mysteriously, suspicions turn to cake decorator Daphne Martin. But all Daphne did was deliver a spice cake with cream cheese frosting--and find Yodel's body. Now Daphne's got to help solve the murder and clear her good name. Problem is, her Virginia hometown is brimming with people who had good reason to kill Yodel, and Daphne's whole family is among them."
Murder Takes the Cake will soon be released by Thorndike in a large-print library edition, and an English large-print publisher--BBC Audiobooks--has also secured rights to the book. The second book in the Daphne Martin Series--Dead Pan--will be released in November of 2009.
Always Keepers Press, a new Knoxville-based audio book publisher, will be releasing Between A Clutch and A Hard Place, a now out-of-print book written in 2005, in February of 2010.
The first book in her latest mystery series, a cozy embroidery mystery tentatively titled The Quick and The Thread, will be released by NAL/Penguin under the pen name Amanda Lee in August of 2010.

K. M. Whittaker Reviews Suspenseful Novel
Author's website: www.victoriahoward.co.uk
Genre: Romantic Suspense
ISBN: 9781935407683

Review
An emotional roller coaster that was fast paced, filled with murder, suspense, lies, and romance. I really enjoyed this mysterious storyline. The plot smoothly flowed from one chapter to the next, and the end finalized swiftly, but efficiently, to give the reader a well delivered finale to a suspenseful read. Romance was present, but not the main factor in the read, but I felt this was evenly distributed to give us those elements we look forward in any suspenseful romance thriller. I was worried towards the end only 15 pages to go and still no deal was sealed. But Victoria ended it well, nothing left unfinished, and a finale which I am sure pleased the reader. I know I was impressed.
The main characters are very different, but fit the jigsaw well. Every little detail was included, giving an insight to the character’s personality and views. Descriptions were well portrayed -including thoughts, emotions and surroundings. I enjoy this in a read, as I am a visual reader!!!
I enjoyed Jack’s character - definitely not flawless, but his love for his daughter softened his hard exterior, good cop -hard arse. He knew what his responsibilities were and never faulted with either. He was brave, and respected, and gallant to the end.
Grace was a tortured soul. Living in a loveless marriage she stuck to her vows, no matter what. She was withdrawn in the beginning of the story, but in time her character grew strong and determined to move on with life, and start to live. I was happy to see Grace stand her ground no matter what happened to her. She had a strong will and in the end this showed in her character.
There are plenty of villains present creating that mystery and suspense that we all crave in a good thrilling read. Their characters coming across as callous and uncaring and just hard arse, this was portrayed well. You grew to hate the characters and what they stood for, but this also is part of a great story.
Overall, Victoria never disappoints in her writing, intriguing the reader into the world that she has created, drawing us into the suspense, and mystery and even little loving entwined. The romance wasn't a big part of the story, but I fell it was just perfect, giving us the insight to Jack and Grace's emotions and dragging us along in the moment.
All secondary characters meshed well with the story line, making it an enjoyable read, all necessary and blending in well with the plot.
I've now read two of Victoria's stories and have enjoyed both immensely. I certainly look forward to more of her stories in the future. A must read!! That will keep you on the edge of your seat, right till the very end

Reviewer says, "Definite Page Turner"
By Tiffany Craig Brown
http://www.tiffanycraigbrown.com/
Mystery
ISBN: 978-1432756963
Reviewed by Dreamworld Books
Heaven's Rage is the first novel by Tiffany Craig Brown, a former corporate communications expert and also former managing editor of the Natomas Journal established in the Sacramento area.
Heaven's Rage is the story of a retired helicopter pilot named Richard Tate who is found murdered in his apartment; the most likely suspects being four women from Tate's past -- three ex-wives and his college lover. Homicide Detective Ian Buchanan must interview all four women to determine who killed Tate, however the more he learns, the more he sympathizes with the women and not the victim!
Tiffany Craig Brown initially pulls readers in by making us privy to the gruesome details of Tate's crime scene, as well as presenting us with a clue left behind at the crime scene in the form of mysterious vomit that is presumed to come from someone other than the victim. I must admit I was truly intrigued by the vomit and where it originated from! As we read the first few chapters, it is evident that Brown definitely performed thorough research concerning the police procedural methods, which are artfully executed.
Upon finishing up with the initial crime scene portion, Heaven's Rage is then split up into four main sections detailing each horrendous relationship Richard Tate had with the women in his life. We learn that Tate (appropriately nicknamed Dick by the way) is a disturbed man with severe issues stemming from his childhood and just like Detective Buchanan, we are appalled by Tate and of the way he treats each woman. I found myself feeling genuinely happy that someone murdered him for the novel's sake, and became emotional in sympathizing with each suspect!
The flow of the novel is superb because it's got the "I-can't-put-it-down!" quality, with perfect transitions and breaks in all the right spots. As a reader, the pleasure and value of Heaven's Rage is being able to identify with each of Tate's "victims", and we find that we love to hate Richard "Dick" Tate along with trying to identify the murderer.
My biggest jaw-dropping moment occurred while reading the following excerpt from ex-wife Jordan's story, in which she recounts an experience on a road trip and camping outing Dick forces her to take with their children:
"I'm really sore and uncomfortable, Dick," she lamented. "Did you forget
your promise to the doctor? You were supposed to let me get out and
walk around every couple of hours..."
"Oh, quit your bitchin'," he interrupted. "You've done nothing but complain
through the whole damn trip. Stop being such a baby!"
Tears stung her eyes. Her lips trembled and her voice wavered as she
responded, "I gave birth six days ago! I shouldn't even be on this trip!"
She swiped at her eyes furiously but the more she tried to stop crying,
the harder the tears fell.
The above sample is just one of many injustices and harsh treatments Dick imposes on his wives, and this is exactly why we end up sympathizing with the suspects. Can you imagine the idea of spending the rest of your life with such a character? Tiffany Craig Brown will stir much emotion and instill such rage in you while reading Heaven's Rage.
Being an avid murder mystery reader, I believe Heaven's Rage may have been more impacting had there been more concrete clues scattered throughout the novel in regards to determining the murderer's identity. The largest draw and allure of crime and mystery novels is being able to apply the author's clues to solving the murderer's identity before it is revealed to us. Although the murderer's identity is indeed surprising, Heaven's Rage does not provide readers with enough clues to solve the mystery on their own.
I personally enjoyed Heaven's Rage because of my familiarity with the military lifestyle (being a military brat myself) and having lived in the locations featured in the novel including Colorado Springs, San Diego, and Coronado. On the other hand, you won't need to be familiar with the above attributes to enjoy Heaven's Rage and better yet, it will appeal to all genres of readers! Heaven's Rage is evidence that Tiffany Craig Brown has amazing talent hands-down, and as a reader you won't be disappointed! No matter what your taste, you'll gain something from Heaven's Rage whether it be satisfaction from revenge or even being able to relate to nasty divorce and custody battles, among many other real-life experiences this novel brings to light.
Heaven's Rage was released in May 2010, and I hope to see Tiffany Craig Brown follow it up with another. Be sure to stop by and visit her website at http://www.tiffanycraigbrown.com/ .

Former Journalist Pens 5 Star Mystery--Humor, Too!
Genre: Christian romance and mystery
ISBN 978-1-77127-274-2
I have read J.Q. Rose's books before and this is another good one. The author has that uncanny knack of putting together a serious situation with a touch of humor. Not too much, just enough to lighten the thread, without being insulting to the deceased. J.Q. Rose managed to make romance and murder a believable possibility and for this I commend her.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which says a lot as I don't usually read inspirational books, but this is a definite "can't put it down" book. Well done Ms Rose, can't wait for the next book from your writing desk.

Mystery Writer Brian O'Hare Shares Readers Favorite Review
Brian O'Hare has a refreshing voice in the crime and mystery genres, a clear and enjoyable one. The author plunges readers into the mindset of a serial killer and forces them to navigate the darkness that inhabits the killer's soul. From the beginning, the reader is gripped by curiosity and wants to discover more about the villain, but they quickly discover that the darkness is addictive, nourished by a grim, pervasive form of humor that rubs off on the reader. The author explores the darkest instincts of humanity and creates characters that are sophisticated and real. The novel is ingeniously plotted and the online presence of the killer gives the feeling of one who is everywhere and yet nowhere. The Dark Web Murders is suspenseful, psychologically disturbing, and emotionally engaging. An expertly written crime novel that leaves you with nightmares.

Billie A. Williams Pens Another Myster, This with a Christmas Backdrop
by Billie A. Williams
Mystery
ISBN: 1-60813-090-8
Publisher: Publish America
Reviewed by J Gayle Kelly, author of Watermelon Patch and other novels
Mystery writer, Billie A. Williams, publishes mysteries as fast as a missile streaks across an ocean. The Capricorn Goat, one of her fairly recent releases, does not disappoint. She has assembled a book full of entertaining characters, as usual, who excite the reader and move the story forward. For the most part, these characters with such "fun" names, are intelligent, and especially, very human.
Williams’ protagonist, January Flannel, is a mystery author who finds herself immersed in an intriguing mystery which is far too real for comfort. Her good friend Sasha "Echo" Folio is accused of murder and although she entangles herself in the same danger Echo is in, January does not back away. A quote from The Capricorn Goat gives the reader a sense of January’s loyalty to a friend and a peek into her experience as an author: "As a writer, her mind puts the pieces of the mysterious murder together in a puzzle, all the clues interlocking."
Williams stealthily cuts a slice of political intrigue into the mix. How can she explain to her teenage daughter, Taylor, why her father who suddenly disappeared many years before, has suddenly resurfaced in such a profound circumstance? The story centers on the characters and their relationships with each other and the men that complicate their lives; the threats that curse their every day. January is run down by a "hit and run" driver which nearly takes her life, and puts her in a wheelchair. An intruder bullies his way into her house; shots are fired, bullets find their mark. A local teenager is kidnapped. All this at Christmastime when parties are planned and shoppers fill January’s gift shop, The Capricorn Goat.
The climax will keep the reader on the edge of his seat, and all the pieces of the puzzle finally slide into place and click at the end. I promise you, The Capricorn Goat, will make you glad you sat in a cozy chair with your favorite cup of tea and submerged yourself in Billie A. Williams’ gift for writing.

Twitter Talk: A Reality Check to Your Trepidations, Safety and Other Concerns
Twitter Talk
by Your Review Acquisition Coordinator
Lois W. Stern
The Twitter accounts of several prominent personalists including Elon Musk, Joe Biden, and Kim Kardashian, had been hacked in a Bitcoin scam setting off a wave of alarm about this platform’s security. The hackers obtained control of employee credentials and hijacked accounts of some influential people who appeared to be tweeting out for those account followers to send them Bitcoins. This hack led to a lot of concerns about the security of the social media platforms. Although #FreePress is an inalienable right in our democracy, #FreePress does not include freedom to spread false information or damage someone else through libel or incitement.
You might have read about the accounts of other prominent personalities twitter has closed down for similar reasons, but since I am not an Elon Musk or other high profile personality, I’m not concerned about having my Twitter account hacked. But since this issue recently came up again when I suggested that authors whose books are listed as part of my TheNewBookReview free book review query service hop onto Twitter, I wanted to address it.
Note that I used the word suggested. It is hardly a requirement that you join Twitter to have your book listed at http://bit.ly/FreeBookstoReadandReview It’s just that having a presence on Twitter is simply an effective way for us to help you get many more eyeballs focused on your book. So I will repeat those suggestions below, but first let’s address the security issue.
PART 1:
How to protect your Twitter account from hackers
Although I have not done either of the following to safeguard my Twitter account, if you have concerns about your security, here are two things you can do to further protect your account:
1. Turn on two-factor authentication. This feature adds a secondary layer for a hacker trying to crack into your account. For a hacker who does not have internal access, this is a very difficult layer to crack. Keep scrolling for my easy instructions on how to add this layer. *
2. Unfollow and Block: If you find that a user is stalking you or troubling you on your platform, you can either unfollow them to stop seeing their tweets or block them, to make them vanish from your Twitter feed and messages altogether. *
*(See footnote below for details on how to engage those features.)
PART 2:
Here are the suggestions I already sent out to the authors whose books are listed at: http://bit.ly/FreeBookstoReadandReview.
If you’re not yet on Twitter, please try to establish your page now. Here is a super video I recommend - clear and very easy to follow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwKwOyb62xs
My advice: Go slowly, you don’t have to learn Twitter all at once.
Just follow the steps on this YouTube guide to set up your profile now, and learn more about other ways to use Twitter as time goes on.
Whether you are a newbie or seasoned Twitter users, here is what I am suggesting you do:
Once you have a Twitter account, go to the upper right corner of the screen and type in @tales2inspire2 to follow me and @FrugalbookPromo to follow Carolyn (the founder and owner of this blog).
Here’s why: Carolyn and I will begin tweeting about each genre of books listed at http://bit.ly/FreeBookstoReadandReview. Once you are following us, watch for our tweets relevant to your genre, because that’s your chance to jump in, retweet our tweets, and add a few tempting words to attract readers to your book. To do that you use the little icon underneath every tweet that looks like a comic dialogue bubble as pictured below.
Now suppose your book is listed in the MYSTERY genre. When you see Carolyn or me tweet about the this genre, grab that opportunity to expand on that tweet by clicking on it and adding a comment as
“Nothing like a good mystery thriller! Check out (your mystery book title here). . . about (. . .) by clicking on the MYSTERY icon at http://bit.ly/FreeBookstoReadandReview.”
Don’t forget to click on the + sign next to the blue TWEET to add a picture of your book cover, because Twitter viewers love images.
We are hoping to make this a game changer for you and your book(s)!
This is another free service from #TheNewBookReview.
To jump on the bandwagon and have your book listed as well, follow the steps listed at:

Interview: Journalist Writes Comics! and Science Fiction
- What
is your genre? Is it fiction or nonfiction? I write mystery-thrillers as
well as science fiction and sports non-fiction.
- What
made you want to be a writer? When I was in grade school I
was always coming up with “stories” that I would write down and I haven’t ever
stopped.
- Of all
the authors out there, who inspired you most? At first it was Edgar Allan
Poe and H.G. Wells. But more recently, I would have to say Jack McDevitt.
- What
is your writing style? Do you outline? Linearly? By scene? Why?
I like
to create three dimensional characters that the readers can fully connect with,
put them into a situation that really puts them to the test and hopefully take
the reader on a great ride from the first page until the last. I outline because
I like have each step of the story fully laid out before I begin. The one quirk
I have is that I write the opening chapter first and then I write the last
chapter before going back to end of the first chapter and finishing the story
from there.
- Do you
write every day? How much? How long? I try to write every day
(when life manages to stay out of the way long enough of course) and for as long
as I can. (Anywhere from an hour up to a 14-hour marathon I put in during
From The Fields).
- Do you
think reading is as important to writing for an author? Why?
I do.
You can learn a lot about crafting a story by reading other stories, especially
those in the genre you are writing in.
- What
are some of the things you would like to share with budding authors?
Keep
writing, no matter what. It took me 15 years from the time I sat down and
decided to write my first sci-fi novel until the time I had finished it and it
was published. My mystery-thriller, Reservations, which was just released is the
prequel to a movie script I wrote in 1998. The lesson is: Never give up on your
writing, no matter how gloomy things may appear to you at the
present.
- Do you
have any marketing and promotional advice, referrals, tips you would like to
share? Be relentless and shameless.
Never pass up an opportunity to post a link to your book on social media no
matter how much of a stretch it may seem to be. I once posted a flyer about one
of my books in a sandwich shop.
- Do you
think conferences are beneficial? If so, what have you learned? Which ones do
you frequent? I do. You get a chance to
meet potential readers face to face. Sometimes you will sell a few books.
Sometimes you won’t sell a thing, but someone you met at the event will buy a
copy online and hopefully tell their friends how good your book was and how cool
it was that they met you.
- Where
can we find you, your books and when is your next event? My
website is: www.richardpaolinelli.com and all of
my books are on the main page. Click on the covers and the link will take you to
each book’s page on Amazon.com. I have a radio appearance on Dec.
13th but my next in-person event is the Tucson Festival of Books at
the University of Arizona on March 12th & 13th. www.richardpaolinelli.com Paolinelli
