A Real Grandpa Tells Stories in a Real Grandpa's Voice

Title: Alex Asks Grandpa About the Olden Days

Subtitle: A 1940s Story

By Gary L. Wilhelm

Illustrator: Pieter Els

Publisher: Wise Owl Factory

Available at Amazon

ISBN: 9781729375280 (2020)

Genre: Children’s Picture Book

Author Speaking in a Real Grandpa’s Voice

Grandpa Shares His Childhood Memories

Gary L. Wilhelm is doing his Grandpa Thing for his grandson Alex, exactly as a grandpa would. He talks about commonplace things and events from his childhood like furnaces in the basement that must be fed coal to operate and his scary moment with a bull. Commonplace when he was a child, but not so common for today’s children with so many families headed for cities and suburbs and in this fast-moving computer age like telephones without dials—or pushbuttons!

And he does in his real grandpa voice. It’s as natural as if a real grandchild were sitting on his knee, but every reader benefits from the closeness of his point of view. Alex Asks Grandpa About the Olden Days achieves something close, something rare and it does it easily, conversationally,  and with love.

An Unlikely Book Full of Learning Opportunities for Kids

Title: The Frogs Buy a New House
Subtitle: an economics story for children
Author: Carolyn Wilhelm
Illustrated by Oxanna Cerra's Teacher's Clip Art
ISBN: 0999776630
Available on Amazon
Also available at an e-book

It is my guess that most parents don't have an inkling that a teaching aid like this available and that they are most unlikely to think about it when they are in the throes of moving.  But here it is straight from a teacher experienced in helping little humans to adjust to new experiences.

It helps understand the process, what to expect from buying a new house and moving from familiar surroundings to new ones. And it does it with imagination. Imagine water as money. Imagine a book that gives a parent (or teacher) a chance to explain the word "equity!" I believe that words like this are age appropriate at whatever age a child might hear them in conversation around the house or at school.

Though a slim book--a picture book--this book is intended for guided reading, for spending special time with adults to read and discuss its contents, laugh, and start feeling comfortable with a subject loaded with learning opportunities!  As a parent and former teacher myself, I wish I this book had been available for me to read to my daughter when we moved high into the hills around Los Angeles where there just happened to be seasonal ponds full of tadpoles in spring and lots of frogs year round!

Christmas Shopping Time with a Round the World Theme

Title: Sophia
The Christmas Eve Snow bunny and the Real Gift
Author: Wanda Luthman
Illustrated by Mara Reitsma
Genre: Children's Picture Book / Inspirational
Theme: Christmas Round the World
ISBN: 9 780998195889
Paperback: $6.99
Available on Amazon:  https://amzn.to/2B7dZwT

I am fast becoming a Wanda Luthman and Mara Reitsma fan.  I love their imaginations expressed in their poetry and art. I love the rhyme (lots of rhythm but rhyme that doesn't feel forced nor cliche).

I love that children are often introduced to a new word in Luthman's books. Words like "hemisphere" in this 'round-the-world story, a theme that is often seen in Christmas books but is especially needed these days as we work to include and understand other peoples and their cultures.

Is it too early to shop for Christmas? Heavens no! Children 'round the world will enjoy cuddling up before bed to partake of this bunny story from right now through the holidays. Bunny story? Of course! No point in labeling. She even wears a Santa hat.

Carolyn Wilhelm's Early Learning Interracial Adoption Story

Title: Alex Asks About Auntie's Airplane Day
Subtitle: An Adoption Day Story
Author: Carolyn Wilhelm
Illustrated by: Pieter Els
An Easy Reader Book (2017)
ISBN: 9780999776612
Reviewed from a paperback copy.

Forever the teacher, Carolyn Wilhelm writes not only for the story but also to build vocabulary. Interest builds as children ask, "What is an airplane day?"  Ever the teacher, Wilhelm also introduces a child to terms they may not have yet learned like "lug wrench."  This story will help any young reader or listener know more about adoption, understand it better, and helps prepare them for accepting diversity no matter what their color, too.

The illustrations are reminiscent of color paper cutouts, colorful and graphics.

MORE ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The idea for this book occurred to Carolyn Wilhelm when she saw her two-year-old grandson watch his Auntie Betsy from South Korea and seemed to wonder how she fit into the otherwise white family. Wilhelm says, "who knows shat he was thinking, but it appeared he was noticing Auntie
s eyes and skin color.  Wilhelm decided a book could help her grandson and other young children with older, adopted relatives understand a little about adoption. The author runs Wise Owl Factory, LLC, Minnesota. Readers, teachers, and parents will find her Wise Owl teaching materials, many of them absolutely free on Pinterest. Little Birdie Grows Up by Wanda Luthman is the story of a little bird who is welcomed into the world by Mama Bird. Birdie snuggles up to Mama Bird and feels happy with her. Little Birdie is hungry and wants to eat something. Birdie thinks a worm will be good. Little Birdie also dreams of flying up high in the sky and at the same time is scared of falling. Little Birdie is proud of the first flight and lands down with a bump. Little Birdie has grown big and has become strong. This beautiful story captures the growth of Little Birdie from that of being a baby to an adult and leaving home.

Narrated from a bird’s point of view, the story takes the reader through the various stages of development and life changes of Little Birdie. The illustrations are lively and colorful and they add a good pace and movement to the story by breathing life into the scenes and characters. It is an excellent story for interactive sessions in classrooms and school libraries as it tells kids about growing up and leaving home. Parents and grandparents can use it for bedtime story-telling as it encourages children to grow and embrace the new changes that are going to happen in their lives while growing up. The concept and message are good and definitely helpful to child readers to look at their life, growth, and development with the right perspective. The rhyming verses make the narration lyrical and enjoyable for kids

Title of Book: Gluten-Free Me, Beckmin Goes to School
Author: Christy E. Bykowski
Author Website: www.glutenfreekids.info
Twitter URL: @christybyk
Publisher: Halo Publishing, Int.
ISBN Number: 13: 978-1-61244-228-0
Publication Date: January 2014
Genre of Book: Children’s Picture Book

Review provided by: World of Ink Network

About the Book: “Beckmin goes to School” is meant to raise awareness for celiac disease and the everyday challenges children with celiac disease face in their otherwise normal activities.  As diagnosis of celiac disease increases, education, awareness, and understanding will be the keys to making celiac kids feel normal and included. Written for children to help them express and understand celiac disease, the book is a wonderful tool for children and adults alike.

EXCERPT:

Five-year-old Beckmin headed off to kindergarten for the first time.

Beckmin climbed on the bus and waved goodbye to his mom.

Beckmin’s new teacher Mrs. Frederick said, “Let’s start our day with breakfast.”

The kids lined up to get their cereal.

Beckmin looked around.

“Here, you can share this cereal with me,” said his new friend Ellie.

“No, I can’t eat that,” said Beckmin.

“Why not?” asked Ellie. “I like it a lot.”

“It has wheat in it. See…” he said, turning over the box.

He pointed to the ingredients and spelled, “W-H-E-A-T.”

“So?” said Ellie.

“I can’t eat wheat,” said Beckmin. “I have celiac disease.”

“Silly what?” asked Ellie.

“Celiac (SEE-lee-yak) disease,” said Beckmin. “It means I can’t eat wheat.”

“That’s silly,” said Ellie.

“It’s not silly. It’s special,” said Beckmin.
